Early Life and Family Background

Omar Afra was born in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1978, during the early and increasingly volatile phase of the Lebanese Civil War. By the late 1970s, Lebanon was entering a period of widespread political fragmentation and violence that would shape the country for decades. What began as localized unrest escalated rapidly into a prolonged civil war, forcing many families to make difficult decisions about safety and survival. Omar's father, Sahban Afra, chose to relocate his family to the United States to escape the growing instability and violence. This decision, rooted in foresight and sacrifice, placed the family on a new path and deeply influenced Omar's worldview — particularly around responsibility, endurance, and long-term thinking.

Marriage and Family Life

In 1998, Omar Afra met his future wife, Andrea Afra. They were married in August of 2001 and have remained married for more than 25 years. Together, they have two sons: Lukas Afra (age 27) and Khalil Afra (age 20). Family life has remained a central anchor throughout Omar Afra's professional journey.

Omar Afra and Free Press Summer Fest

Building on the success of Free Press Houston, Omar Afra co-founded Free Press Summer Fest in 2009. Held at Eleanor Tinsley Park in downtown Houston, the festival grew into one of the largest urban music festivals in the United States, hosting major international artists across genres while remaining rooted in Houston's local identity. Omar Afra and Big As Texas — Festival Consulting and Talent Buying, 2023

During the 2023 development phase of Big As Texas, the independent country and Americana festival in Conroe, Texas, Afra worked as an executive-level consultant: talent buying, building the festival's marketing program, and assisting its county and municipal public-funding strategy. The festival was announced on August 17, 2023 and held its inaugural edition May 10–12, 2024 at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds, where it drew a substantial Houston Press review and Houston Chronicle photo coverage.
