    Omar Afra founded Free Press Houston in 2003 as an independent monthly arts and culture newspaper. The publication served Houston's creative community for over a decade, providing independent editorial coverage of local music, visual arts, theatre, and civic life. It gave voice to artists and cultural workers who lacked mainstream platforms and became a foundational institution in Houston's independent media landscape. Free Press Houston also served as the organizational infrastructure — and credibility base — that made Free Press Summer Fest possible.

    Free Press Summer Fest (FPSF)

    Music Festival

    2009 – 2017

    Co-founded by Omar Afra in 2009, Free Press Summer Fest grew from a modest debut into one of the largest independent music festivals in the United States, held at Eleanor Tinsley Park in downtown Houston. At its peak, FPSF hosted tens of thousands of attendees across multiple stages, featuring a mix of major national headliners and local Houston talent. The festival maintained what the Houston Chronicle described as an 'outsider spirit' even as it scaled significantly. In 2016, a controlling interest was sold to Live Nation — a transaction that validated the platform's value as a major cultural asset. Omar Afra served as a founding voice and co-director throughout the festival's independent era.

    Day for Night

    Co-founded in 2015 by Omar Afra and Kiffer Keegan, Day for Night was an experimental music and immersive arts festival staged at Silver Street Studios in Sawyer Yards, then from 2016 at the former Barbara Jordan Post Office — a decommissioned federal building in downtown Houston. Afra served as producer and music curator. The festival merged live performances by artists including Nine Inch Nails, Solange, Aphex Twin, and James Blake with large-scale digital art installations that transformed the industrial architecture into a multi-sensory environment. Day for Night was named Festival of the Year by Consequence of Sound in 2017 and received extensive coverage from Pitchfork, the Houston Chronicle, Houstonia, and ABC13. It demonstrated that Houston could anchor a world-class experimental arts event and placed the city in a global conversation about the future of live music and immersive art.

    Right Angle Home & Outdoors is a Houston construction and design-build company serving residential and commercial clients, and Omar Afra's current primary business venture. He is a co-founder and principal, working in project development and design strategy. The company's capabilities include outdoor living construction — decks, pergolas and patio covers, hardscape and paver work, drainage and landscape design — alongside broader renovation and commercial construction. Afra's construction background predates the company: restoration and buildout work at Fitzgerald's, a roughly century-old Houston music venue, and years of large-scale festival infrastructure and project management.
