The State of Live Music Affordability 2026
Omar Afra · Live Index · 2026
A study of what a 662-festival dataset can — and cannot — reliably say about live-music affordability. It keeps current ticket evidence, free admission, historical fallback pricing and native-currency observations apart instead of collapsing them into a single misleading average festival price.

Why I Built Live Index
After two decades spent publishing, marketing concerts, running venues and producing festivals, Omar Afra had accumulated a long record of good decisions and expensive ones. The essay explains why that experience eventually turned into a research question — what actually governs the economics of live music — and why he started Live Index to answer it with data rather than anecdote.

Current research focus
- Ticket pricing and affordability — building defensible measures of concert price inflation and what attendance costs in real terms.
- Venue infrastructure — tracking grassroots and mid-size room capacity as developmental inventory rather than news-cycle closures.
- Touring and market structure — routing gravity, underserved metros, and how consolidation compounds across ticketing, venues and data.
- Festival economics — what a festival weekend actually produces and costs at the city level.
- Live-event technology — dynamic pricing, fan data rights, and fan-aligned ticketing design.
