Omar Afra — New Media Art

Omar Afra is a Houston, Texas–based cultural producer whose work with Day for Night placed him at the center of a growing global conversation about new media art, digital art and technology, and their integration into large-scale live events.

Day for Night launched in 2015 at Silver Street Studios in Sawyer Yards, Houston, and moved in 2016 to the former Barbara Jordan Post Office. The festival was distinguished by its commitment to presenting Houston new media art and international digital art installations alongside a music program that included artists like Aphex Twin, Nine Inch Nails, Solange, and Björk. Installations transformed the industrial architecture of the post office into an immersive environment where audiences moved between sound, light, and interactive digital works.

The festival's approach to art, music, and emerging technology drew attention from publications including Pitchfork, which profiled the event's integration of visual art and music curation. Consequence of Sound named Day for Night Festival of the Year in 2017, citing its unique positioning at the intersection of live music and contemporary art.

Afra's curatorial vision for Day for Night reflected a broader thesis: that festivals could function as platforms for digital art and technology, not merely as concert venues with decorative installations. This approach influenced how other international music festivals began incorporating immersive art programming and contributed to the broader dialogue around music and technology in the live events space.
