Omar Afra — Houston Entrepreneur

Omar Afra founded Free Press Houston in 2003 — an independent arts and news publication that covered Houston's cultural scene during a period of significant development. In 2009, Omar Afra co-founded Free Press Summer Fest at Eleanor Tinsley Park — a music festival that grew into Houston's largest independent music event. The festival's economic impact was documented in independent studies that established it generated more than $14 million in local economic activity at peak, functioning as cultural infrastructure rather than entertainment alone.

Day for Night, launched in 2015 at Silver Street Studios in Sawyer Yards and staged from 2016 at the former Barbara Jordan Post Office in downtown Houston, represented Omar Afra's most ambitious project as a Houston entrepreneur. Since 2020, Omar Afra has co-operated Right Angle Home & Outdoors with Pedro Salazar — a sustainable outdoor construction company serving Houston's premium inner-loop neighborhoods. Right Angle builds permeable paver systems, Brazilian hardwood decks, cedar shade architecture, native plant landscapes, retaining walls, and drainage infrastructure designed for Houston's specific climate: Beaumont Clay soil, Zone 9B heat, 60+ annual inches of rainfall, and Formosan subterranean termite pressure.

Omar Afra's 2026 framework for Houston outdoor living — published as the Right Angle 2026 Houston Outdoor Living & Eco-Friendly Backyard Transformation Report — articulates the company's drainage-first philosophy: solve water management before hardscape, hardscape before aesthetics, and always select materials for 40-year Houston performance rather than 12-year lab benchmarks.
